VOLUMETRIC™

"Necessity is the mother of invention" and my challenge came when I received the commission to translate 20 magazine covers of Norman Rockwell into clay doll bodies, which were destined to become collectible porcelain dolls. The most difficult of those challenges, I soon realized, was how to maintain constant volume for the dolls as well as for other creatures and objects which were to be placed next to the finished dolls and how to make it in the proper scale, which was essential.

That is when the idea of the Basic Piece and the name Volumetric which came with it, came into being.

Sculpting the VOLUMETRIC™ way
Volumetric means Measured Volume. Sculpting the Volumetric way means using the correct measured volume of clay for each part of the body.
THE SIZE OF THE BASIC PIECE or B.P. DETERMINES AND CONTROLS THE SIZE OF THE FINISHED SCULPTURE.

The Norman Rockwell commission lasted two years followed by others. If you go to the page entitled commissions you will find examples. In addition to dolls, I began to make miniature figurines and since at the same time, I wanted to populate my granddaughter's doll house with a properly sized little doll family, I also developed THE DOLL HOUSE SIZED (one inch to one foot) SMALL BASIC PIECE or as referred to here S.B.P. Please take your time examining the concept and then try it yourself using the enclosed guide. I promise you that you will be amazed how well it works. And if a doll house family has a lap dog or a cat the volumetric method will make him fit on their lap.
